Examining EFL Learners' Dual Perspectives: Affective and Cognitive Aspects of Self-Regulated Grammar Learning Strategies

Enhancing one's proficiency in English grammar represents a foremost objective for individuals who are learning a foreign language. In EFL contexts, it is commonly observed that children tend to acquire knowledge of grammar rules incidentally, whereas adults usually require formal instruction to attain a more advanced level of proficiency. Numerous contemporary approaches have undergone substantial investigation, yet comparatively limited emphasis has been placed on the acquisition of grammar learning strategies. This article investigates the perspectives of learners with regards to the utilization of grammatical learning strategies during the duration of an English language course. This research centers on the cognitive and affective viewpoints of individuals participating in a grammar study group. The objective of the research is to investigate the utilization of specific strategies by learners for the acquisition of varied grammar structures. Novel methodologies and empirical investigations have the potential to enhance the comprehension of the educational process and self-regulation. The aforementioned holds the possibility of significant repercussions for individuals engaged in the English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learning process, educators facilitating such learning, and professionals responsible for designing EFL curricula.

Teachers have the power to change their students' lives for the better, therefore teachers should be armed with some skills to be effective. Reflective teaching as one of these skills empowers teachers to observe and evaluate themselves. Although research on reflective teaching has a long tradition, little is known about whether it could be a significant predictor of language teacher immunity and work motivation as two important factors determining the success or failure of teachers, particularly in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) context. Thus, the present study aimed at examining the possible association among reflective teaching, language teacher immunity, and work motivation through path analysis. To this end, English Language Teacher Reflective Inventory (ELTRI), Language Teacher Immunity Instrument (LTII), and Multidimensional Work Motivation Scale (MWMS) were administered to 320 Iranian EFL teachers. Data analysis revealed that teachers with higher reflective teaching practices are more immunized and motivated. Moreover, the significant role of language teacher immunity on work motivation was discovered. The implications of the present study may shed new light on the significance of incorporating reflective approach into teacher development programs as a core subject.

Comparative Analysis of Speech Rhythm Measures for Persian Speaker Identification: Duration vs. Intensity(مقاله علمی وزارت علوم)

Previous studies have demonstrated the efficacy of speech rhythm measures in speaker identification across various languages with different phonotactic structures. In Persian language, in particular, two categories of speech rhythm metrics were examined: duration-based and intensity-based metrics. Building upon these prior works, the current study delves deeper into the discrimination capabilities of the mentioned measurement types—duration-based versus intensity-based—in the context of Persian speakers. To achieve this, a multinomial logistic regression model was employed on a dataset comprising 20 male Persian speakers, each reciting 100 sentences at a normal speaking pace. Findings revealed that, when distinguishing between Persian speakers, duration-based measures outperform intensity-based ones, however, this excellence is very slight. This observation is significant, as it sheds light on the suitability of specific rhythm metrics for Persian speaker identification. I postulate that this discrepancy in performance may be attributed to the simple syllable structure of Persian and the lesser reliance on intensity as a primary indicator of lexical stress. This research contributes valuable insights into the choice of rhythm metrics for optimal Persian speaker identification and underscores the importance of considering linguistic features when developing speaker recognition systems.Top of Form

Relationship between Speed of Reading and Reading Comprehension Score in Undergraduate Students of EFLU: A Disquisition

The present study is an attempt to find if there is a relationship between silent reading speed and reading comprehension score in undergraduate students a pre-requisite study before starting a research involving factors related to metacognition and the affective domain. The sample of the study consists of twenty-four undergraduate students pursuing various foreign languages such as French, Russian, Arabic, Japanese, and German. To assess the reading comprehension of the students, two passages with multiple choice questions were selected from a book designed to check and improve reading speed and reading comprehension. The students worked in pairs, keeping a record of time taken to read for their partner. The word count of the passage was divided by the student’s speed of reading to analyze the reading speed simultaneously the students answered the multiple choice questions given after the passage which was used to assess the comprehension level. The findings of the t-test revealed that there is a significant difference between the reading speed and reading comprehension scores and the Pearson’s correlation shows that there is a positive and moderate relationship between the two variables. Secondly, it revealed that there is a significant difference between male and female students with respect to their reading comprehension scores and reading speed. In both cases the female students performed better in comparison to the male students. Finally, it reveals that there is a significant difference between the students pursuing different languages at their undergraduate level with respect to their reading comprehension and reading speed. The results indicated that the students from Japan had the highest scores, followed by those from Germany, France, Arabic, Spanish, and Russian.

بررسی دامنه نفوذ و گسترش وام واژه های فارسی در زبان های مختلف و از آن جمله زبان های اروپایی با انتشار آثاری چند در دهه های اخیر همراه بوده که خود بیانگر اهمیت و البته جذابیت موضوع است. بررسی آثار موجود نشان می دهد که شناسایی و معرفی وام واژه های فارسی در زبان های انگلیسی، آلمانی، فرانسوی، سوئدی، آلبانیایی و اسپانیایی با پژوهش هایی داخلی و خارجی همراه بوده که خلأ چنین بررسی هایی درباره زبان ایتالیایی به عنوان یکی از زبان های مهم اروپایی کاملا مشهود است. در حالی که تعداد وام واژه های ایتالیایی در زبان فارسی انگشت شمار است، نتایج پژوهش حاضر مبین وجود حداقل پنجاه وام واژه فارسی در زبان ایتالیایی است که در این مقاله شماری از آنها در قالب بیست مدخل معرفی، به روش کتابخانه ای توصیف و تحلیل شده اند. علاوه بر معرفی واژه در زبان مبدا و مقصد بر پایه منابع و فرهنگ های معتبر، به سیر انتقال، زبان های واسط و دگرگونی های معنایی و آوایی آنها نیز اشاره شده است.

استعاره در ادب فارسی، قدمت و جایگاه والایی داشته است. ادبیات ذاتاً پدیده ای اجتماعی است و پیوند ادبیات و جامعه پیوندی متقابل، دیرینه وانکارناشدنی است. نویسندگان و شاعران از دیرباز اندیشه ها ی اجتماعی خود را با عناصر هنری آمیخته اند و درقالب شعر و نثر بیان کرده اند. هدف این پژوهش، بررسی انواع استعاره های هستی شناختی در داستان سه تار است. نگارندگان در صددند تا نشان دهند که استعاره های هستی شناختی در داستان سه تار چگونه به کار رفته است و چه مفاهیمی از طریق این استعاره ملموس شده اند. ماهیت روش شناختی این پژوهشِ کیفی، توصیفی-تحلیلی بوده و داده ها از داستان سه تار اثر جلال آل احمد گردآوری شده اند. یافته ها حاکی از آن است که راوی به منظور انتقال مفاهیم موردنظر از استعاره به خوبی بهره گرفته است. همچنین، نتایج نشان داد که کاربرد استعاره های هستی شناختی در این داستان از فراوانی بالایی برخوردار بوده، به گونه ای که تعداد 15 مورد از استعاره ها شامل 3 استعاره هستومند و ماده، 9 مورد استعاره مکان و ظرف و 3 مورد استعاره شخصیت بخشی بوده اند.

This study examines the occurrence of increments in three languages (Nigerian English, Yoruba, and Pidgin) in the medical context in Nigeria with the aim to give a functional classification to increments built upon the conceptual and structural description in the literature. This is a step further from reflecting the manifestation of increments in the monotypic context of mundane interactions to an investigation of the phenomenon in an institutional context. Fifty audio-taped recordings of naturally occurring conversations in selected hospitals in three states in southwest Nigeria were transcribed and analysed using Conversation Analysis. Functional classification of increments in the data revealed six types of increments namely, symptom-motivated, information-motivated, history-related, face-saving, emphatic, and mundane. The increments were mainly glue-ons and very few instances of non-add-ons in the context of history-related increments. Patients were more frequently disposed to designing increments than doctors in STI and HIV consultations in Nigeria. The patients utilized the symptom-motivated increments for the purpose of elaborating on their health concerns and for clarifying the most pressing symptoms. This afforded them the opportunity of unburdening their health concerns and focalising more pressing symptoms. In addition, the sensitive nature of their condition also spurred the deployment of face-saving and history-related increments to handle embarrassing and face-sensitive questions about their condition and lifestyle.

Comparing the Effects of Mind-Mapping vs. Concept-Mapping Techniques on Iranian EFL Students’ Reading Motivation, Reading Comprehension, and Willingness to Communicate(مقاله علمی وزارت علوم)

As there have been few studies on the comparative effects of mind-mapping (MM) and concept-mapping (CM) techniques on learning English language skills and sub-skills, this survey pursued to scrutinize the impacts of these techniques on reading motivation, reading comprehension, and willingness to communicate (WTC) of Iranian EFL students. To fulfill these objectives, 78 intermediate EFL students were selected based on non-random sampling and accidentally assigned to two experimental groups (EGs) and one control group (CG). They were then pre-tested using a reading motivation test, a reading comprehension test, and a WTC test. Next, the intervention was conducted on the three groups. The MM technique was employed to teach 16 English reading texts to one EG and the CM technique was applied to teach the same texts to the other EG. None of these techniques were used to teach the texts to the CG. When the intervention ended, the post-tests of reading comprehension, reading motivation test, and WTC were given to the three groups. The outcomes of the One-Way ANOVA tests and the post-hoc Scheffe tests revealed that there was a substantial difference between the scores of the EGs and the CG on the three post-tests, with the results being in favor of the EGs. In effect, the findings indicated that the MM and CM techniques enhanced reading motivation, reading comprehension, and WTC of the experimental participants equally. Finally, the implications and conclusions of the research were explained.

مطالعه پیکره بنیاد تفاوت های جنسیتی در گویش بابلی(مقاله علمی وزارت علوم)

زبان شناسی پیکره ای یکی از روش های نوین در مطالعات زبان شناختی است که به مطالعه زبان در پیکره های زبانی می پردازد. زبان شناسی اجتماعی نیز به تفاوت ها و شباهت های زبان شناختی میان (و در) گونه های زبانی می پردازد و تأثیر متغیرهای اجتماعی را در تولیدات زبانی بررسی می کند. در اثر پیش رو به بررسی نقش جنسیت در کلام گویشوران گویش بابلی براساس رویکرد پیکره ای بیکر (2010) در زبان شناسی اجتماعی پرداخته شده است. در ابتدا پیکره گویشی گویش بابلی تولید شد و پس از ترانویسی املایی، به فارسی معیار ترجمه شد. داده های پیکره از طریق مصاحبه با گویشوران جمع آوری شد و به منظور کنترل متغیر موضوع داده های متنی، از تمام مصاحبه کنندگان خواسته شد که در مورد موضوع مشکلات و سختی های زندگی صحبت کنند. به منظور بررسی نقش متغیر اجتماعی جنسیت، کلیدواژه های داده های متنی شرکت کنندگان در دو گروه سنی میانسال و سالمند از هر دو جنس با کنترل متغیر سن، توسط نرم افزار لنکس باکس شناسایی گردید و سپس دسته بندی معنایی کلیدواژه ها انجام شد. نتایج نشان داد متغیر جنسیت در بازنمایی مفهوم سختی ها و مشکلات زندگی مؤثر بوده است.

بررسی رده شناختی قید حالت در زبان فارسی براساس چارچوب لوب دیل (2005)(مقاله علمی وزارت علوم)

پژوهش حاضر بر مبنای چارچوب رده شناختی لوب دیل انجام شده است. لوب دیل (2005) در پژوهش خود قید حالت را در 120 زبان دنیا بررسی کرده و آن ها را در 10 راهبرد جای داده است. هدف از انجام این پژوهش، پیداکردن جایگاه رده شناختی قید حالت در زبان فارسی براساس چارچوب لوب دیل  است. در پژوهش حاضر، ابتدا موارد ده گانه راهبرد های لوب دیل (2005) بررسی می شوند. سپس قیدهای حالت زبان فارسی به روش کتابخانه ای از منابع متعددی مثل کتاب خصوصاَ کتاب مشکلات را شکلات کنید و بلندی های بادگیر، مثال های مقالات متفاوت و در نهایت دانش زبانی محققین جمع آوری و با راهبرد های لوب دیل مقایسه می شوند. در نتیجه این پژوهش بیان می شود که راهبرد های همخوان با زبان فارسی راهبرد های پیش بینی کننده، عبارت حرف اضافه ای، افعال قیدگون، صفت غیرشخصی و قیدی هستند. همچنین در ارتباط با راهبرد هم پایه غیرشخصی که وی برای زبان فارسی در نظر می گیرد باید گفت که این راهبرد در این زبان استفاده نمی شود. در نهایت پژوهش می توان گفت که راهبرد های صفت شخصی، هم پایه شخصی و غیرشخصی، وصفی و وصفی ربطی در زبان فارسی استفاده نمی شوند.

The use of digital games has increased dramatically in the last two decades due to the augmentation in the number of Personal Computers (PCs) and mobile devices worldwide. Not only can digital games be played for entertainment, but also, they may have both positive and negative effects on their players. Various effects of digital games on individuals’ levels of attention span, concentration, and addiction have already been tested by numerous studies; however, their impact on incidental Second Language (L2) acquisition is still untouched by language researchers. To address this lacuna, this is a longitudinal observational study that lasted for three months to investigate the impact of digital games played by young learners for entertainment at home on their unintentional acquisition of English as an L2. The age of the participants ranged from 8 to 14 years old, and the experiment was conducted during the Covid-19 pandemic in 2021. Three main games were played by the sample; namely, Free Fire, Minecraft, and Among Us. The findings revealed that digital gaming significantly influenced the vocabulary development of the participants, and gaming was a clear asset for their L2 acquisition. It was also found that the players’ level of vocabulary retention was high; however, two drawbacks were identified in this regard, namely, the prolonged screen time and vocabulary items specifically related to a given area of a particular game. Overall, this study can be an impetus for further research into evaluating the benefits or drawbacks of using digital games for specific aspects of L2 acquisition such as the development of cognitive abilities or enhanced understanding.

Game-based learning and the use of Artificial Intelligence in education is a powerful way to enhance learning and provide content that has been underrated in the Iranian context. This study designed an educational video game under the name of Lost p to improve learners’ writing ability based on a process based-approach within Dynamic Assessment context. Thus, the researcher employed experimental design and used the designed video game as a medium of instruction for the experimental group. The control group received a teacher-oriented method and both groups received feedback and corrections based on the Aljaafreh & Lantolf (1994) self-regulatory scale. The result of the study shows that the experimental group outperformed learners in the control class. We found that teaching paragraph writing rules, such as drafting, getting idea techniques, topic sentence development, and integrating them with the elements of the game were entertaining for the gamified group. To explore players’ attitudes toward the game, a semi-structured interview was conducted that showed differences between gamified and non-gamified writing tasks in the post-test phase of the research since the experimental group’s writing scores were enhanced in the second phase of the study. Moreover, this study suggests L2 learners and teachers can adapt game thinking and elements of games to their educational practice.

سغد نام باستانی منطقه ای اطراف در بدخشان در ماورالنهر بود. مرکز این منطقه، شهر سمرقند است . مردم سغد در زمان ساسانیان به دلیل فعالیت شان در بازرگانی، به خصوص تجارت با چین و هند معروف بودند و یکی از قطب های اصلی اقتصاد ایران به شمار می آمدند. از این زبان در دوره ایران میانه، آثار بسیاری بر جای مانده که یکی از مهم ترین آن ها ، نامه های کهن سغدی است. ن امه های کهن سغدی به زبان و خط سغدی به سال 1907 میلادی توسط سر اورل استاین در یکی از برج های نگهبانی دیوار چین بدست آمد. این اسناد شامل پنج نامه کامل و چهار تکه پاره شبیه به نامه است. نامه های سغدی تحولات سیاسی و اجتماعی مردمان آن روزگار چین را بازگو می کند. نامه چهارم از طرف مردی خطاب به شخصی از اهالی ترفان به نام نیوا برت در نهم آذر سال 313 میلادی نوشته شده است.

Pronunciation is one of the sub-skills which has significant effect on improving the communication competency and linguistic performance. Moreover, Pronunciation is one of the most difficult parts of teaching a foreign language to adults. It seems that the sub-skill of pronunciation is not taught in the form of a well-rounded program in communicative approaches and interactive conversations in Persian language classes, and that learners pronounce Persian under the influence of the phonemes of their mother tongue. This study is an attempt to provide an answer for the question of what strategies foreign learners use in their learning process by examining pronunciation learning strategies. The current research is the application and collection of research data using the field research approach and the descriptive method is used for the data analysis. The research instrument in data collection is a questionnaire composed of 43 items, each question containing a pronunciation strategy. After verifying validity and reliability, it was randomly distributed among foreign Persian learners. Based on the findings, they make significant use of cognitive, social, metacognitive and compensatory strategies. Commonly, mother tongue does not have a significant effect on the use of these strategies, but Chinese speakers use the group of cognitive strategies significantly more than Arabic speakers do.

Dynamic assessment offers a holistic approach to evaluation by embedding assessment within instruction. Despite evidence suggesting the effectiveness of DA in language classrooms, there remains a reluctance among teachers to adopt DA practices. This reluctance stems from a lack of understanding of how DA models impact specific learning outcomes, particularly in speaking skills. One main contributing factor is the dominance of quantitative DA studies, which do not contextualize the differences between DA models. With an inductive thematic analysis design, this study explored the perceived effects of interactionist and interventionist DA models on speaking accuracy, fluency, and complexity among Iranian EFL students. Thirty undergraduate intermediate EFL learners from Islamic Azad University, North Tehran Branch, were recruited through purposive sampling. Each participant had received one hundred hours of speaking lessons with one of the DA models embedded before participating in a semi-structured interview. The analysis of participants' perceptions and reflections revealed that both DA models were well-received for improving speaking skills but had different effects on subskills. Learners perceived the interactionist model as an effective teaching method that improved their speaking accuracy and complexity but reduced fluency, while the interventionist model favored fluency at the expense of grammatical accuracy and complexity.

Despite some investigations highlighting the role of English literary texts in learner identity construction, few studies have explored how integrating translated short stories from learners’ native culture impacts L2 learners’ identity reconstruction in EFL contexts. This study addresses how learning English through Persian short stories translated into English can affect reader identity reconstruction of Iranian undergraduate students of English. The researchers selected three translated stories of loyalty, justice, and love themes. After collecting the data through five WhatsApp semi-structured interviews and five open-ended questionnaires, the researchers applied qualitative content analysis to the data related to readers’ self-descriptions of the initial L2 learning experiences, the story-based instructional stage, and their aspirations. The findings revealed significant alterations in the emotional and attitudinal states of the learners throughout the stages. Despite prioritizing different cultural and linguistic resources, the three participants highlighted the contribution of resources in language learning in the story-based stage and in their aspirations. All participants focused on the scaffolding role of their native language and culture in enhancing classroom interactions. The results would enlighten materials developers to integrate translated literary texts from Persian literature into language teaching programs

This study posits that an important key component of political discourse derives from its heavy reliance on persuasion strategies to support the ideological bases. Throughout the argument, the study positions an emphasis on the US Democratic Party’s (DP) success in receiving the public consent and acceptance. Their victory is more likely the result of the power of their democratic ideologies that are constructed through the strategic use of rhetorical devices and linguistic structures. In an attempt to investigate which particular discursive strategies and rhetorical devices are instrumental in constructing a particular type of ideology, we adopted a CDA approach and analyzed Barak Obama’s public speeches to the US nation. The analytic categories found in his speech are: rhythmic paralleled structures and repetition; nominalization; and metaphorical framing. Moreover, in our macro-analysis of Obama’s discourse, special attention is paid to the effective role of devices such as topoi, or fallacies in his political argumentations and positive representation of DP.

The Impacts of a Nationwide High-Stakes Test from High School Teachers and Principals' Perspectives: A Qualitative Study(مقاله علمی وزارت علوم)

Iranian National University Entrance Exam (INUEE) as a nationwide high-stakes test is held annually to screen Iranian high school graduates and admit them into higher education programs in universities. This high-stakes examination has a wide range of impacts on test takers as the primary stake-holders and the parents, teachers, and high school principals as the secondary stakeholders. This study reports the impacts of INUEE on high school teachers and principals. To this aim, 27 teachers and 18 principals from three western provinces of Iran sat for a structured interview. Each interview lasted nearly 30 minutes. All the interviews were audio-recorded and transcribed. Next, following the Grounded Theory (Glaser & Strauss, 1967) as the basis of analysis, the transcriptions were subjected to content analysis to extract common patterns and recurring themes. Content analysis was applied to codify the transcribed interview data through an inductive process of frequent moving back and forth to extract common patterns and recurring themes of the data. After coding and 'quantitizing' the data (Dörnyei, 2007), the basic themes were identified, frequency counted, and tabulated. The results indicated that from the majority of the participants' perspective, the INUEE has detrimental consequences for students, teachers, school principals, and the educational curriculum. The findings of the study underscore the consequential invalidity and unfairness of the test and its negative impacts on different aspects of the educational system. The findings provide practical implications for educational policy-makers, school principals, and teachers highlighting the necessity of their awareness of negative consequences of INUEE.

Psychometric Modelling of Reading Aloud with the Rasch Model(مقاله علمی وزارت علوم)

Reading aloud is recommended as a simple technique to measure speaking ability (Hughes & Hughes, 2020; Madsen, 1983). Reading aloud is currently used in the Pearson Test of English and a couple of other international English as a second language proficiency tests. Due to the simplicity of the technique, it can be used in conjunction with other techniques to measure foreign and second language learners’ speaking ability. One issue in reading aloud as a testing technique is its psychometric modelling. Because of the peculiar structure of reading aloud tasks, analysing them with item response theory models is not straightforward. In this study, the Rasch partial credit model (PCM) is suggested and used to score examinees’ reading aloud scores. The performances of 196 foreign language learners on five reading aloud passages were analysed with the PCM. Findings showed that the data fit the RPCM well and the scores are highly reliable. Implications of the study for psychometric evaluation of reading aloud or oral reading fluency are discussed.

ترجمه متون ادبی: بررسی رابطه متقابل زبان و فرهنگ عامّه در حوزه آموزش ترجمه(مقاله علمی وزارت علوم)

پژوهش حاضر با هدف بررسی و معرّفی راهکارهای مؤثر برای بالا بردن سطح مهارت های ترجمه ادبی دانشجویان رشته زبان و ادبیّات آلمانی در ایران انجام می شود. بخش اوّل این مقاله به تبیین مفهوم فرهنگ، به ویژه فرهنگ عامّه و تأثیر ژرف آن بر ادبیّات و اهمّیّت پرداختن به تفاوت های فرهنگی در حوزه آموزش ترجمه می پردازد. بخش دوم شیوه های گوناگونی را بررسی می کند که می توانند در بهبود کیفیت ترجمه و بازتاب بافت فرهنگی متن های ادبی مؤثر واقع شوند. از نتایج خلاصه شده در بخش نظری در ارائه طرح پژوهشی برای ترجمه متن های ادبی از زبان فارسی به آلمانی استفاده خواهد شد. طرح پژوهشی از نوع برگزاری آزمون با گروه کنترل و آزمایش است و در یک جلسه نود دقیقه ای انجام می شود. پس از اجرای آزمون، ترجمه ها، تحلیل و نتایج معرّفی می شوند. دستاورد این پژوهش معرّفی شیوه های کارآمد برای ارتقای مهارت های ترجمه ادبی و بالا بردن سطح دانش دانشجویان ایرانی درباره اهمّیّت تفاوت های فرهنگی حین ترجمه متون ادبی از زبان فارسی به آلمانی است.
