In this research, the problems that English teachers face in teaching speaking and writing skills to young learners were examined from the perspective of pre-service and in-service teachers. The related challenges and strategies were explored to gain a better insight into teaching productive skills in language education.   The authors adopted a case study research design and interviewed six English (three pre-service and three in-service) teachers. The pre-service teachers were selected from a university, and the in-service teachers were chosen from instructors who had been teaching English to young learners at elementary proficiency levels. For data collection, in-depth interviews and class observations were conducted to triangulate the data. The problems highlighted by the teachers were a lack of motivation, autonomy, a lack of positive attitude toward language learning, and an insufficient tendency to participate in learning English in classes. The challenges also included pronunciation problems, managing class, poor role model teachers, a lack of confidence-building in learning English, a lack of appropriate technology in classes, and a lack of appropriate and entertaining materials. This research has implications for language teaching to young learners in Iran.

There exists a scarcity of studies examining the intersection of neoliberalism discourse, parental involvement, beliefs, and Socioeconomic Status (SES) regarding speaking proficiency of young English learners in the post-pandemic era. To this end, 28 children were selected along with their parents and were taught with the same syllabus, and tuition was waived for children with low SES. Two questionnaires were designed and validated to examine the effect of socioeconomic factors on parents’ beliefs and involvement. The findings showed that  SES has a significant effect on parental beliefs and involvement. The results also indicated that young learners’ parental factors could affect the success of these learners in the post-pandemic era. This research study can encourage more studies on intersectionality in educational research.

As the demand for online language education continues to grow, English teacherpreneurs play a significant role in shaping teaching practice and identity in virtual affinity spaces. This study examined the professional identity and practice of Iranian EFL teacherpreneurs in such spaces. The study adopted a qualitative approach and the data were collected through in-depth interviews and a focus group discussion. The findings of this research indicated that the participants as Iranian EFL teacherpreneurs in online affinity spaces possessed a wide range of positive traits and engaged in interactive and non-traditional teaching practices going beyond EFL traditional teaching practices. They also noted challenges being online English teacherpreneurs in Iran, highlighting a lack of financial support from mainstream education system and insufficient electronic facilities to create online content among others. This study has implications for different agencies in language teaching, including teachers and policy-makers in language education, raising their awareness regarding the identity and practice of online teacherpreneurs in virtual affinity spaces.  

While various aspects of Group Dynamic Assessment (GDA) have been explored in previous studies, cumulative GDA in distance education is an under-researched area. This study aims to examine the effect of on teaching of cumulative GDA in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) settings with a focus on discourse markers. To this end, a mixed-methods design was adopted with speaking tasks of First Certificate in English (FCE) test and interviews used as the main instruments for collecting data in the quantitative and qualitative phases of this study. A total of 64 homogenized female EFL learners were randomly divided into experimental and control groups. Cumulative GDA instruction of discourse markers in the experimental group was conducted by a teacher well-trained in intervention workshops. The analysis of the data based on T-test and analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) showed a positive effect of GDA on the test group. In the qualitative phase of the study, interviews were used as the tool to reveal the attitudes of ten participants in the experimental group who opted to attend interview sessions. The content analysis of the interview results revealed that they had varied attitudes towards online cumulative GDA, and dominantly favoured this teaching approach in distance learning. The results highlight the importance of Assessment for learning (AfL) over Assessment of Learning (AoL) in distance education. Findings have implications for policy, practice and research.
