Employing reliable evidence-based academic word lists has been a noticeable concern for numerous educators, students, and researchers in English for Academic/Specific Purposes (EAP/ESP) courses. Currently, many of these courses still lack research-oriented materials and rely heavily on traditional ways of teaching field-specific terminologies. This study aimed to create a specialized corpus to identify the most frequent academic words in Welding Metallurgy (WM) and to analyze the most prevalent three- and four-word lexical bundles (N-grams). We employed a corpus-based approach, and identified top-tier journals of WM; then, we analyzed the articles from 2017 to 2023 that followed the Introduction, Methodology, Results, and Discussion (IMRD) format. As such, 875 empirical research articles were compiled and analyzed to establish a specialized corpus with four million words. After applying word selection criteria, 608 lemmas were identified. Furthermore, we recognized 68 technical acronyms in the field and grouped them into an independent list. We also highlighted the most prevalent N-grams to explore the field's formulaic language. Consequently, 61 prevalent technical N-grams were recognized. As part of pedagogical implications, this study would deepen ESP course instructors’ knowledge and urges them to be more mindful of evidence-based material. It also encourages students to give more weight to their fundamental discipline-specific needs by incorporating authentic word lists in practice.

The study on second language (L2) argumentative writing has explored various surfaces and dimensions of learner behavior and presentation, although fewer studies have studied effective pedagogical strategies to boost students’ argumentative skills. The current study mentions the gap by exploring the effect of explicit argumentative instruction on the writing abilities of 30 Iranian IELTS candidates, according to CEFR ranging from B1 to B2, in an English Language Institute in Karaj - Iran in both Persian and English, the former their native language and the latter their foreign language . As a set of authentic IELTS Task 2 prompts were used and taken from the language learners, the study analyzed 180 argumentative essays, both in English and Persian, written by the participants prior, while and after instruction. The outcomes had shown noteworthy enhancement in the students’ English argumentative performance, with the recurrent use of argumentation key elements such as ‘claim’, ‘data’, and the ‘counterarguments’. Though, less emphasis was put on advanced argumentative structures such as ‘counterclaims’ and ‘rebuttals’. The results suggest that structured pedagogy in teaching argumentation can positively influence learners’ proficiency in both first language (L1) and second language (L2) writing. The insinuations for teaching argumentative writing in multilingual contexts will be further discussed.

The studies on L2 argumentative writing have surveyed different dimensions of learners’ argumentative behavior and performance. However, less attention has been given to the strategies and techniques enhancing students’ argumentative repertoire. As such, the current study, taking a pedagogy-based perspective, examined the argumentative writing behavior of 30 Iranian IELTS candidates before and after the instruction in both English and Persian languages. The sample questions were of the previous IELTS Writing part 2 essays from a real test by Cambridge University Press, chosen by 3 IELTS instructors in the Institute to meet the research objectives. To this end, 180 IELTS Task 2 argumentative essays were analyzed by 30 volunteers, each having 6 essays, at least 250 words, (Persian and English). As for the students’ English and Persian argumentative writing performance, the results indicated that there were significant differences between the EFL learners’ overall means on English argumentative tests. Furthermore, the candidates chiefly applied ‘data’ and ‘claim’ most frequently in both languages with secondary elements of argument (i.e., counterargument claim, counterargument data, rebuttal claim, and rebuttal data) as the least produced elements detected in the essays. The results demonstrate that a sound pedagogy in argumentation can both influence the use of argumentation elements in both English and Persian written texts. The pedagogical implications for writing instruction and argumentative writing are discussed.

در سالهای اخیر، پژوهش در زمینه یادگیری زبان عوامل موثر بر انتخاب راهکارهای یادگیری زبان بویژه راهکارهای مهارت نگارش به منظور ارتقا یادگیری را بیش از پیش مورد توجه قرار داده است. نوع شخصیت به عنوان یکی از عوامل موثر در کانون توجه پژوهش حاضر قرار دارد که هدفش مطالعه راهکارهای نگارش در رابطه با نوع شخصیت در چند دانشگاه ایران بود. به این منظور، پرسشنامه راهکارهای مهارت نگارش مورد استفاده قرار گرفت تا راهکارهای حافظه ای، شناختی، جبرانی، فراشناختی، اجتماعی و عاطفی مورد استفاده ۲۱۰ نفر شرکت کننده در این پژوهش را مشخص نماید. پرسشنامه مایر بریگز برای مشخص کردن نوع شخصیت شرکت کنندگان مورد استفاده قرار گرفت. تحلیل نظرات ابراز شده شرکت کنندگان رابطه معنی داری را بین راهکارهای ارتباطی و نوع شخصیت نشان می دهد. بر اساس نظرات ابراز شده همچنین مشخص شد که راهکارهای فراشناختی و شناختی پر بسامدترین راهکارها و راهکارهای حافظه ای با کمترین بسامد مورد استفاده قرار می گیرند.

This study was conducted to probe the effect of the observer ring technique on the participants’ writing achievement. In so doing, the researchers utilized a quasi-experimental design with 20 participants in the control group and 18 in the experimental group. Instrumentation included a writing handout, an Oxford Placement Test (standard proficiency test), and a rating scale of writing. As a treatment, the participants in the experimental group were asked to write at home and bring their papers to the class to be corrected by their classmates and the teacher was the supervisor. In the control group, the papers were corrected by the teacher. The results of the pre-test indicated that the participants of the two groups were homogeneous with regard to proficiency level as well as their writing ability. The results of the post-test revealed that the writing ability of the participants in the experimental group had improved during the study. Moreover, the observer ring technique had a positive and significant effect on the participants' writing ability. The findings may promise implications for incorporating this new interactive feedback model into EFL writing classes.
