Writing Motivation
حوزههای تخصصی:
To explore the effectiveness of flipped instruction in influencing second language learning outcomes, the current research investigated the contribution of flipped classrooms of an English-as-a-Foreign-Language (EFL) writing course to Iranian learners’ writing development and writing motivation. In so doing, two intact classes were chosen as the participants (N=43) of this research and they were randomly assigned to a Control Group (N = 18) and an Experimental Group (N = 25). During one semester, the Control Group underwent the traditional writing instruction, while the Experimental Group received a flipped writing instruction. Second Language Writing Motivation Scale (SLWMS) and two timed writing tasks were given to gather the required data. The results demonstrated that the flipped method of teaching was substantially effective in improving the L2 writing performance of the experimental group ( F = 22.20, p = 0.000, partial eta squared = 0.35) . Also, the results indicated that the flipped instruction had a statistically significant effect on learners’ writing motivation ( F = 51.67, p = 0.000, partial eta squared = 0.56) . The findings have remarkable implications for L2 writing methodology.
The Effect of Quantum Teaching Method on Writing Motivation: an explanatory mixed-methods investigation(مقاله علمی وزارت علوم)
حوزههای تخصصی:
Quantum teaching method (QTM), a student-centred model of education, which provides the possibility for the integrated use of a combination of learning theories, has not received adequate attention in EFL teaching. This study, adopting an explanatory mixed-methods design, aimed at examining the effect of QTM on EFL learners’ writing motivation. The participants comprised 78 pre-intermediate EFL learners who were placed into two groups based on convenience sampling procedures. The first group was assigned as the experimental group and another group as the control group. A writing motivation questionnaire (WMQ) was administered to both groups as pretest. Next, the experimental group was exposed to QTM for writing instruction while the control group received conventional writing instruction. After treatment, both groups took the WMQ as posttest. Moreover, 15 participants from the experimental group took part in semi-structured interviews. The results of Mann-Whitney U Test indicated the significantly positive impact of QTM on writing motivation. The results of qualitative analysis revealed five themes including satisfaction, enjoyment, engagement, personalization, and lowering anxiety as the factors improving writing motivation. Based on the results, EFL teachers are encouraged to employ QTM to enhance learners’ writing motivation.
Effect of Performance Assessment on Iraqi EFL Learners’ Writing Competence Motivation for Writing(مقاله پژوهشی دانشگاه آزاد)

حوزههای تخصصی:
This study investigates the impact of performance assessment on the writing competence and motivation for writing among Iraqi EFL learners. In light of the limitations of traditional assessment methods, which often fail to accurately reflect students' abilities and can induce anxiety, this research explores the effectiveness of performance-based assessments as a more engaging and authentic alternative. A total of 41 intermediate-level students from an Iraqi university participated in the study, divided into an experimental group that engaged in performance assessments through dialogue journals and a control group that followed traditional writing tasks. Pre-tests and post-tests were administered to evaluate writing competence, alongside an Academic Writing Motivation Questionnaire to assess changes in motivation levels. The results indicated that performance assessment significantly enhanced both writing proficiency and motivation for writing among the experimental group compared to the control group. This study underscores the importance of innovative assessment strategies in fostering a more effective and motivating learning environment for EFL learners. حوزههای تخصصی:
Dialogue journal writing is extensively regarded as an effective technique for enhancing the writing motivation of EFL/ESL students. However, studies on how dialogue journal writing enhances EFL students’ writing motivation are scarce in the Ethiopian context. This study investigates the impact of dialogue journal writing on freshman EFL students’ writing motivation. Employing a quasi-experimental design, two intact groups were selected from students in the social science stream. After checking their comparability at the onset of the intervention, the two groups were randomly assigned into experimental (n = 37) and comparison groups (n = 35) using coin flipping. Following this, the experimental group was instructed writing for 10 weeks based on the dialogue journal writing approach and the comparison group for the same period, but following the conventional approach. Data were collected before and after the intervention through a writing motivation questionnaire from both groups. The collected data were analyzed using an independent sample t-test, a paired sample t-test, and one-way MANOVA. The result of the study revealed that dialogue journal writing significantly enhanced the experimental group students' overall writing motivation (p<0.05), with a large effect size (d = 1.46), and its sub-components (enjoyment, self-efficacy, instrumentality, recognition, and effort), (p<0.05), with a moderate effect size (η²p = 0.371) when these sub-components were considered combined. The finding suggests that dialogue journal writing can effectively enhance EFL students’ writing motivation. Therefore, university EFL teachers are recommended to use dialogue journal writing in their writing classes to improve their students’ writing motivation.
The Interplay of Enjoyment, Self-Efficacy, and Motivation in L2 Writing of Turkish Learners: A Structural Equation Modeling Approach(مقاله علمی وزارت علوم)
حوزههای تخصصی:
Writing in a second language (L2) presents significant challenges due to the existing cognitive and social intricacies. Furthermore, psychological factors such as motivation are possibly closely linked to L2 writing success. The writing motivation in an L2 is affected by different factors that interact to influence students' experiences and results. Among such factors, writing self-efficacy and enjoyment are essential elements that greatly affect L2 students' motivation. This study attempts to inspect the connections among writing, enjoyment, self-efficacy, and motivation. This study offers a thorough understanding of how such variables interrelate and affect one another. Gaining insight into the predictive force of writing enjoyment and self-efficacy provides valuable knowledge for teachers and scholars in developing interventions and strategies aimed at boosting writing motivation among L2 students. Two hundred and thirteen students from English Language Preparatory schools of two universities in Turkey took part and the three questionnaires, namely writing motivation, self-efficacy, and enjoyment were administered to the participants. The data was analyzed through Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). The results indicated that there is a strong correlation between motivation and enjoyment, while the correlations between enjoyment and self-efficacy, as well as motivation and self-efficacy, were moderate. The result through SEM revealed that two predictors (writing enjoyment and writing self-efficacy) together explain 35.6% of the variance in writing motivation. The results suggest a moderate degree of predictability, indicating that such variables play a significant role in explaining reasons for people’s motivation to write. These results provided important knowledge for language stakeholders.
