This research sought to investigate the relationship between simultaneous interpreters’ oral cloze performance, their emotional intelligence, and gender. In other words, the study tried to predict the variability in performance on simultaneous interpreting (SI) oral cloze test based on the variability in gender, emotional quotient (EQ) and its subscales. To this end, a number of seventy participants majoring in English Translation attending the course Oral Interpretation were selected. The Emotional Quotient Inventory (Bar-On, 1997) questionnaire was given to participants to gather the data. The students were also asked to take an oral cloze exam. The results of the study showed that no significant relationship was found between total EQ and oral cloze performance. However, two of the subscales of EQ, i.e. Flexibility and Stress Tolerance were found to be positive predictors of SI oral cloze score together. The results of the study indicated that the mere acquisition of oral cloze skill as one of the skills required for simultaneous interpreting, cannot guarantee students’ achievement in interpreting. Rather the consideration of personality traits can have a facilitative effect. Moreover, with regard to gender no association was found between student interpreters’ performance and their gender.

Complexity of simultaneous interpreting has long attracted the interest of researchers and led them to explore different linguistic, psychological, cognitive, social, and neurological factors involved in enabling the human mind to perform such a difficult task. Within the framework of cognitive studies of interpreting, the authors of this study aimed at exploring the relationship between selective attention and interpreting performance of undergraduate students of Translation. Interpreting performance was evaluated in terms of content and presentation. A sample of 72 BA students participated in the study and completed a simultaneous interpreting and a selective attention task. Quantitative analysis of the data obtained from the participants led to the conclusion that selective attention had a direct relationship with both content and presentation of simultaneous interpreting performance in the sample as significant correlation was found to exist between the variables. The findings suggest that students with better selective attention are likely to perform better in interpreting tasks, especially in terms of the content of their performance which is concerned with completeness and accuracy of informational content of the interpreted message.

This empirical investigation examines the repair strategies used by trainee interpreters in English-Persian simultaneous (SI) and consecutive interpreting (CI) modes. The research seeks to investigate two main questions: whether there are differences in the frequency of repairs between SI and CI, and whether there are variations in the sorts of repair strategies employed in both modes. The study involved nine trainees from Shahid Bahonar University of Kerman who were learning interpreting. The study employed a 4-minute speech from Voice of America English News, which discussed the influence of vitamins on preventing the advancement of AIDS in women. Occurrences of self-repairs were detected using Tang’s (2020c) framework. The findings revealed a notable disparity in the frequency of repair strategies between CI and SI modes, with CI trainees utilizing a greater number of repairs. In addition, the trainees in the CI mode achieved superior scores in explicitation and synonym techniques. The results emphasize the unique patterns of repair strategies in both consecutive and simultaneous interpretation, reflecting the importance of focused training to improve interpreters’ abilities in both modes. Interpreter training programs may consider including explicit instruction on repair procedures and placing emphasis on evaluating their use in performance assessments.
