Acquiring adequate vocabulary in a foreign language is very important but often difficult. Considering the importance of learner’s vocabulary learning and retention, the present study aimed at examining the impact of playing word games on young Iranian EFL learners’ vocabulary learning and retention at Irandoostan language Institute in Tabriz. To that end, 50 female learners at the age range of 8-12 were selected and assigned into an experimental (n=25) and a control (n=25) group. The design of the study was quasi-experimental with pretest, immediate posttest and delayed posttest. The content of the tests were based on the students’ course books and consisted of 20 items. The researcher utilized the word games in order to teach the selected vocabulary items during the course which lasted for a month and a half. The games were played each session for about 15 minutes. The experimental group was engaged in playing word games as a treatment and the control group received usual instruction. After the treatment, the participants in both groups took the post-test and after two weeks the learners were asked to take the test once more. This time their scores were assigned as the retention post-test scores. The mean scores of two groups were compared three times through the independent samples t-test. The results of the data analysis revealed that playing word games were effective in helping learners to improve their vocabulary learning and retention.

This article presents the attitude of ESP learners towards the role of Self-Access Language Learning Centres in improving their reading comprehension. It provides an evaluation of the success of these contents as well as an interpretation of students’ understanding of the related concepts. Finally it identifies factors that enhance or hinder the successful implementation of Self-Access Language Learning. Both qualitative and quantitative instruments were used to elicit data that give insight into learners’ perceptions of the issues under review. Self-Access Language Learning was evaluated positively by the students, both as a means to improve specialised English and as a means to develop autonomy as well as autonomous learning skills. The study identified a number of factors that contributed to these perceptions. It also revealed that students’ understanding of independent learning is rather shallow. Finally a number of recommendations were made for a successful implementation of Self-Access Language Learning into a curriculum.

A Comparative Study of Metadiscourse in Academic Writing: Male vs. Female Authors of Research Articles in Applied Linguistics(مقاله پژوهشی دانشگاه آزاد)

Like conversation and other modes of communication, writing is a rich medium for gender performance. In fact, writing functions to construct the disciplines as well as the gender of its practitioners. Despite the significance of author gender, as one constitutive dimension of any writing, it has been relatively under-researched. One way, by means of which author gender is practiced, and revealed in written discourse, is the incorporation and use of metadiscoursal categories. Examining 20 applied linguistics research articles (10 written by native male English writers and 10 written by native female English writers), the present study sought to examine whether male and female native English writers differed in their use of metadiscoursal elements. For this purpose, Hyland’s (2005) model of metadiscourse was employed as an analytical framework to identify the type of metadiscoursal elements. The results of Independent samples t-test showed that English male and female writers did not differ significantly in their overall use of metadiscourse; but, significant differences were observed in categorical distribution of metadiscoursal elements. The findings of the study can provide a sound basis for the development of pedagogical materials.

The Self-Regulatory Blueprint: Assessing Its Role in Word Knowledge and Speaking Competence(مقاله پژوهشی دانشگاه آزاد)

تعداد بازدید : ۷۹ تعداد دانلود : ۷۰
Self-regulation is crucial in foreign language acquisition, requiring learners to set clear goals, choose effective strategies, and manage their learning. However, many face challenges in applying these strategies, indicating a need for educator support. This study examined the impact of Self-Regulated Learning (SRL) strategies on word knowledge and speaking competence among Iranian EFL learners. Data was collected from 200 pre-intermediate and intermediate students using the Vocabulary Levels Test (VLT), Self-Regulating Strategy in Vocabulary Learning Scale (SRCvoc), and Key English Test (KET), along with semi-structured interviews with 30 learners in Urmia, Iran. Analysis included descriptive statistics, multiple regression, ANOVA, and thematic analysis. Results showed that learners utilized SRL strategies for vocabulary learning above average, with specific subscales positively affecting acquisition. Commitment control emerged as the most significant factor influencing speaking proficiency, explaining 58.6% of the variance, while satiation control had minimal impact at 15.8%. Challenges in time management, motivation, and anxiety were also identified. The research advocates for targeted interventions to enhance commitment and motivation, contributing valuable insights for educators to improve learning outcomes through tailored instructional strategies that integrate self-regulation training into language curricula.

Instructing interlanguage pragmatics (ILP) is essential for effective second language communication. The present study set out to investigate the impact of Iranian English as a foreign language (EFL) teachers’ meta-pragmatic awareness on their classroom practices and developing strategies in teaching pragmatics. To do so, a qualitative study was designed in which 30 EFL teachers selected through convenience sampling from different districts of Tehran City took part. The participants’ classes were observed through an observation checklist three times during the semester, and live notes were taken in the classroom in terms of their teaching ILP practices and teaching strategy development both before and after an in-service meta-pragmatics training course awareness. The results of the observation data analysis showed the success of the in-service training course of meta-pragmatics. Furthermore, adopting an inductive approach in teaching pragmatics, correcting errors either after a delay or on the spot, and comparing L2 and L1 pragmatic features were among the most frequently used strategies teachers developed after being trained with respect to meta-pragmatics. The study results have some implications for foreign language teacher trainers, EFL teachers, and EFL learners.
