The Dynamic Effects of Economic Growth, Fossil Fuels, Renewable Energy, and Urbanization on the Load Capacity Factor in Iran

Sustainable growth and the reduction of environmental pressures have emerged as paramount priorities on the global agenda, creating the need for more comprehensive approaches to assessing environmental quality. Consequently, to alleviate environmental challenges and realize the objectives of sustainable development, a broad and holistic environmental assessment is imperative. This study investigates the dynamic impacts of economic growth, fossil fuels, renewable energy, and urbanization on the sustainable Load Capacity Factor (LCF) in Iran. The analysis utilizes Fully Modified Ordinary Least Squares (FMOLS) and Dynamic Ordinary Least Squares (DOLS) methodologies over the period of 1995–2022. Based on the estimates obtained from cointegration tests, renewable energy consumption enhances the load capacity within the Iranian economy, whereas economic growth leads to the reduction of the load capacity. Furthermore, fossil fuel consumption, urbanization, and natural resource rents negatively impact the load capacity. Specifically, a one percent increase in economic growth reduces carrying capacity by 0.38%, while a one-unit increase in urbanization, fossil fuel consumption, and resource rents decreases carrying capacity by 0.40, 0.12, and 0.09 units, respectively. Conversely, a one-unit increase in renewable energy consumption adds 0.15 units to the carrying capacity.
