An Analysis of Attar’s Translational Style in Hilyat al-Awliya (Case Study: Shibli)
Attar, as noted in the introduction of Tazkirat al-Awliya, does not claim originality for this work and has adopted the narratives of saints from earlier sources. In this regard, the central question of this study is: How does Attar approach the transmission of these narratives, and what methodology does he adopt as a storyteller and translator? Due to the vast number of mystics mentioned in this work, the present study focuses specifically on the narratives attributed to Shibli (Dalf ibn Jahdar). With a comparative approach and method based on library studies, the narratives of Shibli in Tazkirat al-Awliya and Hilyat al-Awliya are examined to understand how Attar conveys his intended mystical concepts. By interpreting and analyzing key phrases, themes, descriptive styles, and more, this study sheds light on how Attar has crafted and transmitted his narratives of mystical thought. The key finding of this research is that Attar, in his role as both a translator and writer, does not maintain a singular approach but rather assumes a dual function. While faithfully adhering to the source material in recounting Shibli’s narratives, he simultaneously employs elements of reinterpretation, omission, and personal stylistic interpretation to craft his own unique narrative style. This creative reworking serves to simplify the text, eliminate redundancies, and more effectively communicate mystical messages to a Persian-speaking audience. This reflects an interaction between Attar’s commitment to the authenticity of the source material and the cultural needs of his target audience.
