Transtextual Reading of Rumi’s Masnavi in the Khanqah (Monastery) of Shams Tabrizi

The Masnavi “Molana in the Khanqah (Monastery) of Shams” is a relatively long narrative poem composed by Shahriar on the occasion of Rumi Day. Although this work has not received extensive scholarly attention, it may be examined from multiple perspectives. One of these approaches is transtextual analysis, which constitutes the focus of the present study. The poem has been critiqued from this viewpoint, and a new reading has been offered. The research method is descriptive–analytical, and the study is based on library research. The aim is to analyze the transtextual relationships of this poem with other texts, particularly Rumi’s Masnavi. The authors assume that Shahriar has consciously created intertextual links with various texts in both the structure and content of this poem. Based on this assumption and Gérard Genette’s five categories of transtextuality, Shahriar’s intertextual engagement with different texts—especially Rumi’s Masnavi—is demonstrated. The findings show that the structure and content of Rumi’s Masnavi, as well as the poetry and ideas of classical poets such as Rudaki, Ferdowsi, Khayyam, Anvari, Saadi, and Hafez, have influenced the formation of this poem. These relationships have been examined according to Genette’s five subcategories: intertextuality, paratextuality, metatextuality, hypertextuality, and architextuality.
