The Impact of Moral Vices on Moral Knowledge from the Perspective of the Holy Qur’an
Distortions in moral judgment and the inversion of values constitute some of the most critical epistemic and behavioral challenges in individual and social life. Qur’anic teachings reveal that a significant part of such deviations originates in moral vices—dispositions that, by altering evaluative standards, disrupt the faculty of distinguishing between good and evil and undermine the epistemic foundations of human cognition. This study, employing a descriptive-analytical method, examines Qur’anic verses with the aim of elucidating the mechanisms through which vices affect moral knowledge and of analyzing their theoretical and practical consequences. The findings indicate that neglecting innate moral warnings and persisting in actions contrary to ethical principles place the individual on a path of rationalization. The continuation of this process results in the displacement of value standards and the impairment of cognitive faculties—a development that not only distorts practical reason in the sphere of moral judgments but also negatively influences theoretical reason and, consequently, knowledge of God. In this context, repentance, beyond removing the eschatological consequences of sin, plays a pivotal role in restoring harmony between innate criteria and the moral order. The study concludes with a set of strategic recommendations, at both individual and societal levels, grounded in revelatory principles, aimed at preventing the corruption of moral knowledge and strengthening its epistemic foundations.
