Comparing the power of possession in Islamic philosophy with the communication areas of the brain in neuroscience
In Islamic philosophy, the quwwat al-mutasarrifah (the faculty of apprehension/active processing) plays a key role in processing perceptual information. This faculty is responsible for combining and separating sensory forms and particular meanings and acts as an intermediate link between sensory perception and the higher activities of the mind. In contrast, neuroscience has identified association areas in the brain, which include complex networks in the cerebral cortex that integrate and interpret various sensory information. Therefore, the present research addresses this question: Despite the functional similarities between the quwwat al-mutasarrifah and the brain's association areas, are the two also aligned in explaining the reality and the efficient cause of perception? The aim is to clarify the relationship between these two models in explaining the phenomenon of perceptual integration through conceptual and ontological comparison, using a comparative analytical method and a comparative approach. The findings indicate that although both concepts share significant structural similarities at the functional level, they are in fundamental ontological conflict. From a Sadrian perspective, neuroscience deals only with "preparatory causes" (‘ilal-i i‘dādī) and material mechanisms, and neglects the true "efficient cause"of perception, namely the soul as the creator of perceptual forms. Accordingly, the functional similarity of these two models does not conceal their ontological distinction. From the perspective of Sadrian philosophy, neuroscience’s explanation, despite all its precision in describing mechanisms, is incapable of explaining the reality of perception. This analysis represents an essential step in determining the scope and limits of interdisciplinary dialogue between philosophy and neuroscience
