Signification in Vivian Sobchack's film theory: a re-reading from the perspective of Merleau-Ponty's phenomenology
Vivian Sobchack is one of the female theorists of American cinema, who wrote her book "The Address of the Eye: Phenomenology of Film Experience" under the influence of Merleau-Ponty and adopted an existential-phenomenological approach to cinema. Inspired by Merleau-Ponty, Sobchack gives cinema a capacity of signification and introduces two elements of embodied consciousness and flesh in the structure of cinematic significance. Talking about flesh in cinema takes us to the ontology of cinema and considers the signification to be one with existence. Signification is formed by two modalities of existential experience, i.e., perception and expression. Perception and expression are states of embodied existence in the world that are reversed in the mirror structure of flesh, and meaning is formed in the thickness of this existential experience. According to Vivian Sobchack, the camera as a perception and the projector as an expression in the cinema increase the signifying capacity of the cinema and, in a sense, its existential capacity. In this way, the visual movement of the camera becomes a cogito that makes a choice, and the expression of the projector emerges a new meaning from the heart of the old meanings. These actions of camera and projector in cinema are not mechanical in any way and lead us towards existential experience.
