A New Classification and Analysis of the Eleven Sasanian Rock Reliefs at Naqsh-e Rostam

The site of Naqsh-e Rostam, containing the largest number of Sasanian (224–651 CE) rock reliefs, is regarded as one of the most significant ritual-royal centers of this period. The thematic diversity of the reliefs and the multiplicity of Sasanian kings represented in this complex have considerably enhanced its importance in the study of Sasanian art and ideology. A detailed examination of the reliefs indicates that the traditional classification based on eight known carvings is insufficient for contemporary research. The results of analyses conducted through both fieldwork and theoretical frameworks, employing historical and archaeological approaches, demonstrate that eleven distinct rock reliefs were carved at Naqsh-e Rostam: (I) the investiture of Ardashir I Papakan (224–242 CE) on horseback by Ahura Mazda; (II) the relief of Bahram II (276–293 CE) accompanied by the royal family and three satraps; (III) the first equestrian battle scene of Bahram IV (388–399 CE); (IV) the equestrian battle relief of Hormozd II (302–309 CE); (V) an eroded relief; (VI) the victory relief of Shapur I (242–272 CE); (VII) the bust relief of the high priest Kartir; (VIII) the equestrian battle relief of Bahram II; (IX) the second equestrian battle relief of Bahram IV; (X) the investiture of Narseh receiving the diadem from a royal lady; and (XI) an unfinished relief. The concentration of Sasanian rock reliefs, together with evidence of fortifications constructed for their preservation, confirms that Naqsh-e Rostam, along with Naqsh-e Rajab and the ancient city of Istakhr, represented the most important ritual-royal centers of the Sasanian realm in this region. The rock reliefs of Naqsh-e Rostam, through their investiture scenes symbolizing divine and earthly legitimacy and depictions of royal triumphs in battle and equestrian scenes alongside members of the royal family, serve as powerful visual manifestations of the reconstruction of kingship and the legitimization of royal authority during the Sasanian era.
