A Reflection on the Identification of Roman Emperors on the Reliefs of the Victory of Shapur I of the Sassanid

The surviving rock reliefs from the Sasanian period, particularly those depicting Shapur I’s victory over the Romans, alongside inscriptions and historical sources, are among the most important visual evidence for reconstructing political and military events and analyzing the relations between Iran and Rome in this era. Five large rock reliefs were created in Fars province following Shapur I’s victories over the Romans. However, the identification of the Roman emperors represented on these reliefs has always been accompanied by scholarly disagreements. This study seeks to examine and evaluate different scholarly opinions regarding the identity of the Roman emperors in order to provide a relatively comprehensive interpretation of how these scenes correspond to historical events and to achieve a more precise identification of the Roman emperors depicted in Sasanian art. Accordingly, the present research, with the aim of offering a new interpretation of the five reliefs of Shapur I, including three at Bishapur (Bishapur I, II, and III), one at Darabgird/Darab, and one at Naqsh-e Rustam, adopts a descriptive-analytical method based on library research as well as archaeological and historical evidence, to determine the identity of the Roman emperors shown in Shapur I’s victory reliefs. The findings indicate that various interpretations exist concerning the Roman emperors represented in Shapur I’s reliefs. According to these views, the depicted Roman emperors include Gordian III, Philip the Arab, Valerian, Mariades (or Seriyades of Antioch), Balbinus, and Pupienus. This study attempts to explore the possibility of more accurate correspondences between these emperors and the figures represented in the reliefs.
