Problem StatementGiven the increasingly pivotal role of universities in fostering innovation and entrepreneurship, there is a growing need for spaces that facilitate group learning and interdisciplinary academic collaboration. Coworking spaces—flexible environments designed to promote cooperation and knowledge exchange—are emerging as potential catalysts for such engagement. This research investigates the role of coworking spaces in enhancing interactive learning and scientific innovation within academic settings. The aim is to explore how such environments can contribute to collaborative educational processes, and to identify the strategic managerial requirements necessary for their successful implementation and long-term impact.Research QuestionsThis study is guided by the following research questions:1. How can coworking spaces facilitate interactive learning in university environments?2. What managerial dimensions are essential for designing, implementing, and operating effective coworking spaces in higher education institutions?3. In what ways can university-based coworking spaces contribute to fostering scientific and research-oriented innovation?4. What challenges and opportunities exist in the implementation and strategic management of coworking spaces within academic settings?MethodologyThe study adopts a qualitative research approach, employing thematic analysis based on data collected through semi-structured interviews. Participants include university students, researchers, faculty members, and administrative staff who have direct experience with coworking environments on campus. The interviews were guided by open-ended questions, allowing for deep exploration of participants’ perceptions, experiences, and insights. This methodology enabled the identification of core themes related to the learning and innovation dynamics that occur in coworking spaces, as well as the managerial practices that either support or hinder these processes.FindingsThe findings reveal that coworking spaces can play a significant role in promoting interactive learning by facilitating interdisciplinary collaboration, fostering team-based learning, and encouraging the sharing of diverse perspectives. These environments enable students, academics, and researchers to engage in meaningful dialogue, provide constructive feedback, and co-develop knowledge in a more dynamic and participatory manner. When cross-disciplinary interactions are purposefully encouraged, participants benefit from a broader range of expertise, leading to deeper understanding of complex issues and a more enriched learning experience. This transition from multidisciplinary to transdisciplinary engagement highlights the potential of coworking spaces as sites of knowledge creation and intellectual synergy. At the same time, the effectiveness of coworking spaces is highly contingent upon strategic management. The study indicates that success in these environments depends on intelligent resource allocation, effective coordination between university departments, and clear alignment with institutional educational and research missions. In the absence of coherent managerial frameworks and adequate financial and technical support, the full potential of these spaces remains underutilised. Challenges such as budget constraints and administrative misalignment are significant barriers that must be addressed. As such, the management of coworking spaces must be research-informed and problem-oriented—aiming not only to improve operational logistics but also to create added value for the academic community.Innovation and Research ImpactIn terms of fostering scientific and research innovation, coworking spaces provide dynamic platforms for interdisciplinary networking, collaborative project development, and access to emerging technologies. These environments, by bringing together individuals with diverse expertise and backgrounds, stimulate creativity and support the co-creation of novel solutions to complex problems. Through such interactions, interdepartmental and cross-faculty research initiatives emerge, giving rise to innovative academic outputs and entrepreneurial ventures. A key feature of this process is the shift from traditional teaching models to a more collaborative, mentoring-based learning paradigm—one that prioritises active participation, reflective dialogue, and creative thinking over passive knowledge transmission.Challenges and OpportunitiesThe challenges and opportunities associated with implementing coworking spaces in academic contexts can be categorised into two main areas. On the one hand, operational obstacles—such as limited funding, lack of interdepartmental coordination, and the absence of comprehensive management guidelines—can significantly impede the effectiveness of these environments. On the other hand, numerous opportunities exist to leverage coworking spaces for academic advancement. By designing flexible, user-centred spaces that support team collaboration and social interaction, universities can significantly enhance the efficiency and impact of teaching, research, and innovation.ConclusionThis study underscores that coworking spaces, when managed strategically and aligned with institutional goals, can serve as powerful instruments for advancing interactive learning, fostering innovation, and encouraging interdisciplinary collaboration in higher education. However, realising these benefits requires the proactive identification and mitigation of managerial and structural barriers. Practical recommendations are offered to assist university administrators in unlocking the full potential of coworking spaces. These include adopting integrated management strategies, securing sustainable resources, and embedding coworking principles within broader institutional frameworks. Ultimately, if implemented effectively, coworking environments can become vital assets in the pursuit of academic excellence and educational innovation.
